WARDS OFF BURSTS
Set in a square mile of land, Gloucester Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest hospital trusts in the country and provides high quality acute elective and specialist care for a population of more than 612,000 people. The Hospital has a vast underground water network to sustain their activities. A secure supply is necessary to ensure patients receive specialist care and employees are able to carry out their roles.
Project Background
Regular bursts on the site posed challenges for the Hospital, generating unnecessary costs and inconvenience. This prompted them to contact our team in order to gain the right solution to repairing the current bursts and preventing such bursts occurring in the future, whilst causing minimal disruption to services and traffic on-site.
Work Conducted
To facilitate a secure water supply, Severn Trent Select (Part of Severn Trent Services) installed over 500m of 180mm MDPE pipe work throughout the site. Because of the critical nature of the hospitals day-to-day function, loss of any of the utility services could have had serious implications. Therefore prior to laying new trunk mains, our specialists carried out a detailed site survey to locate and map all of the underground utilities. By identifying where the gas, electricity and fibre optic cables were located, we minimised the risk of disruption.
The volume of traffic on site was also high and unpredictable, however emergency vehicles must have access at all times and the traffic must be able to flow. Where remedial work was likely to impact on access routes, we implemented a traffic management system with suitable alternatives.
Outcome & Benefits
As a result of this project, the Gloucester Royal Hospital can now provide their wards, departments and specialist units with a more secure supply of better quality potable water. Additional cost, compliance and efficiency benefits have also been delivered through a reduction in water consumption and therefore associated overheads.
